Hi, the name kinda speaks for itself, I am a regular guy with no expertise in any department, yet I still want to be heard as if I am one. This blog is pretty much my views, theories and evaluations on subjects that I have no business commentating on, let alone writing a blog and charging people to read it.
The paragraph above is a pretty good summary of this platform and frankly of who I am, I am 23 year old male from Canada, I do not have a PhD, I do not have a lot of experience and I got terrible grades in school. So my resume doesn’t scream “genius”nor does it scream “potential”, but one thing for sure that it may scream is “opinionated” and I definitely have a lot of those. These opinions of mine will be posted on this blog and they’ll be covering a wide range subjects such as religion, science, psychology, evolution, etc. Pretty much anything that I have a theory on that I think people may be interested in, will be on this website.
As you can see after reading the first couple paragraphs is that I certainly don’t think too highly of these thoughts of mine. I believe this is important to share because:
- I do not want people to take what I say too literally. Growing up I had the privilege to be around some very smart people, because of this I only listened to these people and didn’t have a thought on any subject or event until I heard theirs and whatever they said I always assumed was the truth. The lesson that I learned (may not be applicable to everyone) is that just because your smart doesn’t mean your right. It is always important to have your own organic opinion and one of the methods I find helpful is to spend some time alone. I am not saying don’t have friends, we are social creatures and magic, innovation and connection is created when great minds collide (Innovation is idea’s having sex – Matt Ridley), however social proof is a real phenomenon and one can simply “go with the crowd”. This isn’t a bad thing, however history has showed the consequence of participating in group think and a lack of individual thought can result in one being brainwashed. The group is now a TEAM and the purpose of a team is to WIN not to further one’s understanding. One of my favourite people to list to Naval Ravikant has a very interesting perspective on groups.
A mob of people has a mind of it’s own with each member unintentionally influencing another to the extreme. That is why I think it is important to spend enough time alone to develop thoughts that you truly believe. Another method that I find helpful is to listen to a wide range of people (smart or dumb, but preferably smart) to receive different perspectives on a specific subject (I know, its completely opposite to the previous method) I find taking all kinds of information in consideration can help one filter certain information that is either irrelevant or biased and most importantly make one develop their own view that isn’t persuaded or a replica of someone else. This is why I encourage readers to add on, disagree or offer a different point of view that could help us have a better understanding.
2. These are just opinions. I am aware that on the first point I typed a lot of confusing gibberish just to summarize with “I encourage readers to add on, disagree or offer a different point of view that could help us have a better understanding.” So i’ll keep this one short: I do not want people to be upset of what they might stumble upon on these posts. I do have very controversial opinions, however the most unproductive thing to do to with a controversial opinion is to shut it down, in a time of controversy it is best to understand one another and the best way for that is to talk with an open mind(“ The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life” – Muhammad Ali). Many controversial takes in history has resulted in many prosperous ideas, inventions and discoveries (Copernicus, Natural Selection, Semmelweis’s Hand washing, etc.) I don’t know if our discussions will change the world but it may change our individual views for the better. Dr Seuss (one of my favourite people to quote) once said “To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world”.
Examples of disasters started by group think:
Heaven’s Gate
In 1974 Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles founded “Heaven’s Gate” a religous group that believed in the existence of extraterrestrial beings and, ultimately, that they could achieve salvation by leaving their human bodies and ascending to a higher level of existence on a spaceship they believed was trailing the Hale-Bopp comet. In March 1997, 39 members took their own lives as part of a mass suicide event, believing it would allow them to join the supposed extraterrestrial spacecraft. According to famiy and other cult participants Member Richard Ford (aka Rio Deangelo) had expressed doubts about the cult but ultimately succumbed to the pressure and group think.
Bay of Pigs
The bay of pigs invasion occurred in 1961 when Cuban exiles were gathered up from the US government and sent to the beaches of Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the then supreme Fidel Castro. The invasion failed as 118 exiles were killed, 360 were wounded and 1,200 were captured. Not only was the invasion a complete failure, it further strengthened the alliance between Cuba and the Soviet Union resulting in the Cuba missile crisis a year later which is widely considered the closest we came to a nuclear war. Prior to this event, President Kennedy and Joint Chief of Staff Lyman Lemnitzer expressed concerns and doubts about the invasion but ultimately approved the go-ahead plan.
Through my research on this event I found a piece from Wikipedia that I found quite interesting:
On 29 April 2000, a Washington Post article, “Soviets Knew Date of Cuba Attack”, reported that the CIA had information indicating that the Soviet Union knew the invasion was going to take place and did not inform Kennedy. On 13 April 1961, Radio Moscow broadcast an English-language newscast, predicting the invasion “in a plot hatched by the CIA” using paid “criminals” within a week. The invasion took place four days later.
David Ormsby-Gore, the British ambassador to the U.S., stated that British intelligence analysis made available to the CIA indicated that the Cuban people were overwhelmingly behind Castro and that there was no likelihood of mass defections or insurrections.
A year later Kennedy would eventually learn from this mistake as he denied the request to invade Cuba using false flag attacks on American citizens in Operation Northwoods.
Example of understanding rather than fighting:
Daryl Davis
Now you can probably guess from this picture that the “open minded person who tries to understand his opposition” is the black man on the left. That is Daryl Davis, a talented piano player who played with rock legends such as Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry, that is impressive enough, but the area in which Darryl shines is his involvement with the Klu Klux Klan (Never thought I’d say that about someone). Throughout his time over 200 members of KKK and Neo Nazi’s have volunteer to leave their groups because of Daryl Davis without him even trying to persuade them to leave. So how did he do this? By talking and understanding, although Darryl disagreed with their views he never stayed closed minded, he never fought, he simply listened.
